4 Scriptures for the Mom who Needs Some Peace of Mind

This morning I had a meltdown.

I wouldn’t normally share this, but maybe you’re having a hard time letting go too?

My oldest son just told me a few days ago that he is moving out of our house.

Part of me knows it’s the right thing for him, he’s turning 20.

But another part, a bigger part, wants to tell him 5 billion reasons why he should stay under our roof, protected from the outside world.

It’s hard to let go of our kids.

Letting them grow up can feel like we are throwing them to the wolves.

So this morning, I laid all of my concerns before the Lord.

What if he fails, Lord?

Will he reach out if he needs me?

Are we going to be close and continue to grow our relationship if he’s not in our house?

I cried. I told him all of my concerns. And then I sat, weeping.

In those moments, He reminded me that I’m not alone in this.

I can have peace of mind in the midst of watching my kids grow up and out of our home.

But it wasn’t just going to happen.

In the times where we feel alone and uncertain about the future of our children, we have to get intentional with our walk with God.

We have to dig into the scriptures and confess what God says about us and about our children.

Drawing close to God and pressing in becomes our strategy for battling fear of the future.

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:28 NLT

As moms we often carry the burdens of the home.

We worry about the kids, our spouse, the finances, and everything else.

Sometimes I think we believe that “worry” is just part of the job description for the title “MOM”.

Yet the older I’ve gotten (and the more I’ve grown in the Lord), I’ve come to realize that we don’t have to worry.

Worry may be our first instinct, but it doesn’t have to be our first response. We can CHOOSE to have peace of mind. Click To Tweet

When things don’t go the way we plan or we can’t see what’s ahead, we can instead CHOOSE to trust in our God.

Because even though we have doubts, He doesn’t. He knows the end from the beginning. Nothing takes Him by surprise.

Doesn’t that bring a comfort to your momma heart?

It does for me!

I don’t have to worry about my son, or any of my kids. I can rest in the Almighty, because I know He’s got us covered.

…casting all your cares [all your anxieties, all your worries, and all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares about you [with deepest affection, and watches over you very carefully]. 1Peter 5:7 AMP

It’s simply amazing to me how much God loves us. He has so much grace, patience and kindness towards us.

I love this version of 1 Peter 5:7.

It shows the extent of how much God cares for us.

He has a deep affection for us and watches over us carefully.

Let that sink in for a second.

The Creator of the entire world, not only wants a relationship with us, but has a love so deep for us that He continually looks out for us.

I imagine when we go to heaven we will be overwhelmingly surprised by the things God protects us from.

When I think about that, I realize that He’s got this.

He’s got my kids, my husband, our business, this blog, and me.

With that revelation, I can lay the fears, the concerns and worries down for good…Just like Peter suggests in the beginning of the verse.

God is striding ahead of you. He’s right there with you. He won’t let you down; he won’t leave you. Don’t be intimidated. Don’t worry.” Deuteronomy 31:8 MSG

Let’s face it….Being a mom can be overwhelming.

I remember when I had my first child. My first thought was, Wow….I can’t believe he’s mine. My second thought was, What in the world am I going to do with him???

I am an only child so I had no idea how to take care of a baby. I felt so inadequate, full of doubts and worries.

Raising teenagers feels the same way. We don’t feel equipped. We hope we are doing it right, but can we be sure???

The words Moses spoke to Joshua in the verse above applies to us today as moms.

We aren’t alone.

God has gone before us. We aren’t doing this alone!! He is guiding us and growing us as mothers. As we spend time listening to His voice, He gives us direction for our kids and how to raise each one. (Because we know none of them are alike!)

God won’t let us down.

As our kids get older, it becomes completely obvious how little control we have over the decisions they make.

Don’t get me wrong, we have influence, but only to the extent that they give it us.

If you have a wayward child or are struggling with a teenager….

Can I encourage you?

Even in the midst of rebellion, God won’t let us or our kids down. He can use even the hardest moment or the ugliest sins to show us our need for Him.

He is always faithful.

There is no extent He won’t go to, to draw our kids back to Him. Sometimes it’s not in a way that we would prefer, but we can rest in the fact that He knows best.

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Philippians 4:6 NLT

It seems impossible to not worry as a mom. But I’m learning to be intentional in this area.

We can’t control the thoughts that come to our mind, but we can control what we do with them. Click To Tweet

When worry begins to fill our minds, we can CHOOSE to turn them into prayers. We know from scripture that worry is useless…it doesn’t change anything. (Matthew 6:27) However, we do know that prayer has the power to change everything. (1 John 5:14)

God hears our prayers.

He responds to the cries of His people. How many times did He save the Israelites when they cried out to Him??? He is just as gracious towards us today.

What does it look like to change our worries to prayers? Here’s an example from my situation with my son moving out:

Lord, thank you that You have my son in the palm of Your hand. You know His ups, his downs, his strengths and his weaknesses. I choose to trust YOU to take care of Him as he ventures on His own. I pray that You give Him guidance, vision for His future and the wisdom to make good choices. Let Him hear directly from you, that He would recognize Your voice at a moments notice. I thank you for Your Holy Spirit that lives on the inside of Him, acting as His counselor. Protect his heart, mind and body from this world. In Jesus’ name, Amen!

Is your mind full of anxiety and worry today? Rest, momma! God is in control. He loves your kids even more than you do.

Can I pray with you today?

Lord, we come to You today on behalf of each mother reading this post. I pray that You would fill them up as they pour out into their children. That You would equip them to be the moms they need to be to each of their children. Holy Spirit help them to recognize the transition times in their children’s lives and aid them in walking them through. Guard their hearts and minds in Christ as they walk out this magnificent role of motherhood. In Jesus’ name, Amen!
